Bible Prophets and Visions

Following is a list of the Bible verses where visions and prophets are mentioned in the Bible. Compare these with the manifestations of Ellen White's visions to determine if they are in accordance with Scripture.

All occurrences of the word "Vision":

1. Gen. 15:1 - Abram - Conversation with God - Saw God, but also saw natural surroundings, such as the stars in the sky.

2. Num. 24:4-25 - Balaam - Fell with eyes open - spoke a blessing from his mouth upon Israel. After prophesying Balaam "rose up."

3. 1 Sam. 3:11-15 - Samuel - The Lord requested to speak to Samuel. Samuel conversed with God.

4. 2 Sam. 7:17 - Nathan - Word of the Lord came to him at night. The Lord spoke to him.

5. Isa. 6 - Isaiah - Saw God in the temple. Heard God talking. Angel touched his lips with coal. Talked to God.

6. Eze. 8:1 - Ezekiel - Sitting with the elders. Saw God. God grabbed Ezekiel by the hair and lifted him up into vision. Ezekiel often describes the "word of the Lord" coming to him.

7. Dan. 2:19 - Daniel - Vision in the night.

8. Dan. 7:2 - Daniel - Vision in the night.

9. Dan. 8:1-3 - Daniel - In the Sushan palace. Lifted up his eyes and saw a vision. After the vision a man appeared to Daniel (8:15). The man was Gabriel (8:16). Gabriel came and stood by Daniel, and Daniel fell upon his face (8:17). Daniel was in a deep sleep, but the angel touched him and set Daniel upright (8:18). Conversation with angel (8:19-26). Daniel fainted after the vision and was sick for awhile (8:27).

10. Dan. 9:21 - Daniel - Gabriel touched Daniel while he was praying. Conversation with Gabriel.

11. Dan. 10:5 - Daniel - Lifted up his eyes and saw and heard a man. People with Daniel did not see the vision (10:7). Lost all strength (10:8). In deep sleep with face to ground (10:9). Angel touched Daniel and put Daniel upon his knees (10:10). Daniel stood trembling (10:11). Conversation with angel (10:12). Daniel put his face on the ground and became dumb (10:15). A man appeared, touched Daniel's lips and opened his mouth (10:16). Daniel has no strength or breath in him (10:17). The man touched him and strengthened him (10:18). Daniel was strengthened by the touch (10:19) and they began a long conversation.

12. Matt. 17 - Peter, James, and John - Beheld Elijah and Moses talking with Jesus. They fell on their face when they heard the voice of God. Jesus touched them and they arose.

13. Luke 1:11-22 - Zecharias - Saw an angel in the temple. Had conversation with angel. Was struck dumb for disobedience.

14. Luke 24:22-23 - Women at Sepulchre - Saw vision of angels and had conversation with them.

15. Acts 9:10 - Annanias - Lord spoke to him in vision.

16. Acts 10:3 - Cornelius - Angel appeared and spoke to him.

17. Acts 10:10-20 - Peter - While praying goes into a trance and sees a vision. Has conversation with the Lord.

18. Acts 16:9 - Paul - A man appeared to him in vision during the night and told him to go to Macedonia.

19. Acts 18:9 - Paul - The Lord spoke to Paul in vision at night.

20. Acts 26:13 - Paul - Paul and his companions see a light shining brighter than the sun. The fell to the earth. They talk (26:14,15). Jesus tells Paul to get on his feet (26:16).

All occurrences of "prophesied:"

1. Num. 11:25-26 - Spirit rested upon 70 men and they prophesied.

2. 1 Sam. 10:10 - Saul prophesied.

3. 1 Sam. 18:10 - Saul prophesied.

4. 1 Sam. 19:20-23 - Various messengers prophesied.

5. 1 Sam. 19:24 - Saul prophesied before Samuel.

6. 1 Kings 18:29 - Prophets of Baal prophesied.

7. 1 Kings 22:10-12 - False prophets prophesied for Jehosophat to attack Syria and that God would give them success.

8. 1 Chron. 25:2,3 - A number of prophets mentioned.

9. 2 Chron. 20:37 - Eliezer prophesied.

10. Ezra 5:1 - Haggai and Zechariah prophesied.

11. Jer. 2:8 - Prophets of Baal prophesied. Also Jer. 23:13,21.

12. Jer. 26.18 - Micah the Morasthite prophesied.

13. Jer. 26:20 - Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjathjearim prophesied.

14. Eze. 11:13, 37:7 - Ezekiel prophesied.

15. Luke 1:67 - Zacharias - Filled with the Holy Ghost, spoke a prophecy over the baby John.

16. John 11:51 - Caiphas - Prophesied one should die for the nation.

17. Acts 19:1-7 - 12 men - Disciples of John. After they were baptized into Christ, Paul laid hands upon them and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

18. Jude 14 - Enoch prophesied.

Other Instances God communicated with man:

Jacob - Gen. 31:11 God spoke in a dream. Gen. 32:24-30 Joseph wrestled with a man.

Joseph - Gen. 37:5 Joseph dreamed a dream. Joseph also interpretted dreams (Gen. 40,41).

Moses - Exodus 3 - Angel appeared to Moses in a burning bush. Moses took off his shoes and talked with God.

Gideon - Judges 6 - Angel appeared to Gideon. Gideon made food for the angel, made a sacrifice, talked to the angel, etc.

Simeon - Luke 2:25-35 - Blessed Mary and prophesied of the future.

John - Rev. 1 - In the Spirit on the Lord's day. Heard a voice behind him. Turned around and saw a vision of heaven.

Were Mrs. White's visions in accordance with 1 Cor. 14?

Paul gives a detailed description of how the gift of prophecy was to operate in the New Testament church:
29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
